Simon Chalifoux

About Simon

French-Canadian bass Simon Chalifoux completed his master’s degree at Université de Montréal. In 2016-2017 he was part of Calgary Opera Emerging Artist Program. His most recent performances include Quince, A Midsumer Night’s Dream ; Colline, La Bohème ; Figaro, Le Nozze di Figaro ; Gremin, Eugene Onegin; Harasta and Farar, Cunning Little Vixen ; Georges Benton, Dead Man Walking ; Dr. Gibbs, Our Town. He also sang the bass and Jesus in Bach St.John Passion, and the bass in Bach Coffee Cantata .

During the 2019-2020 season, he made his debut with Emdonton Opera in the title role of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He also sang Colline (La Bohème, Puccini) in Hamilton, Schaunard (La Bohème, Leoncavallo) in Montréal, and was Leporello in the online production of Don Giovanni (Mozart) from Brott Opera.

He saw an opportunity during the actual sanitary crisis to aknowledge his privilege. He took time to self educate on the subject of racism, sexism and colonialism that plague society as much as it does the arts and culture world. He’s also creating a new dialogical art project that will deploy in Montreal's street in 2021.

When Simon is not singing, he does intellectual and cultural mediation, using music and philosophy to promote social inclusion for people at risk of exclusion. He’s also fighting against social inequities and for social justice.

Marriage of Figaro, Edmonton Opera, February 2020

There were some encouraging debuts, too. Simon Chalifoux is an energetic Figaro, determined not to be phased by the events, but almost failing in the garden.

La chanson humoristique de « La tourtière » (de Lionel Daunais), remarquablement bien jouée par le baryton-basse Simon Chalifoux qui arborait tablier et spatule pour ajouter encore plus de fantaisie à sa mémorable interprétation.

When I am not singing?

Dialogical Art Project

While working for Exeko, Simon acquired an impressive mediation expertise. With this expertise, he created many tools to develop artistic project that invites the public to be full on participants. During artistic residencies or recitals, he created spaces where the participants could discuss on subject like politics, culture, society or critical thinking and use those discussions to co-create an art object. The object aims to render those discussions and exchanges between the participants.
